The School publishes the annual research gazette ‘Nihongo Kyoiku Kenkyu’(Research on Japanese Language Education) No.56.
The gazette has published research papers and essays, practical reports on language teachings, survey reports, etc. since its first edition in 1954. This year’s gazette received nine contributions, two of them from the members of the school’s board of directors and board of councilors. The papars are all written in Japanese.
- Hajime Takamizawa (Member of the board of directors, ex-chief instructor at the Japanese Language and Area Training Center, United States Department of States)
‘Business Nihongo no Riron to Shido-ho no Kenkyu’ (Research on theories and teaching methodology of Japanese for business) p.1- p.27 - Yoshiaki Yanagisawa (Member of the board of councilors, ex-director of the Center for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language, National Language Research Institute)
Short column ‘Dekiru, dekinai kara dekiru yo ni natta-yo he’ (From ‘I can/cannot ‘ to ‘I have come to be able to do’) p.28-p.29
Other papers of particular interest are the following:
- Katsumi Fujitani’s ‘Kyakkanteki Oral Communication Test ni Tsuite’
This paper tries to verify the validity of oral communication test used in the JETRO Business Japanese Test and it will be good reference for the Japanese language teachers because such verification study on a nation-wide oral test is the first of its kind. - Daniela Stabile’s ‘Non-native Nihongo Kyoshi Toshite no Watashi’ (Being a non-native Japanese language teacher)
Ms. Stabille visited Naganuma several times in 2008 and wrote an MA thesis on Japanese language teaching methodology with a major focus on the Naganuma Method. This essay should make us reconsider the deeply rooted bias that only native speakers should teach a language (meaning a Japanese teacher is the most qualified to teach Japanese).
Please contact us at info@naganuma-school.ac.jp if you would like to purchase a copy of this gazette.

Six South American Teachers Visit Naganuma for a Half-day Training
On February 17, six South American teachers of Japanese descent visited Naganuma for a half-day training. They came to learn about the teaching methodology being used in private Japanese language schools. This training at Naganuma is part of a three month training program titled ‘Teaching of Japanese as a Heritage Language’, being sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) . The main body of the three month training was arranged by the Association of Nikkei & Japanese Abroad in Yokohama.
The trainees received lectures from the school’s principal Mr. Suzuki and Ms. Michiko Kojima, Head of Educational Development Dept. They also had a chance to visit the classes. They seemed very impressed with the natural flow of the conversation practice based on the Naganuma method and also how the lessons were conducted without using any other languages but Japanese. |
